They provide a multitude of different options, but their cajun spoiled style with the addition of andouille sausage can make anyone feel warm on a cold day. I have made it my purpose to try to find the best in Portland, and Montage Ala Cart may be the place.

Mac and cheese has been my go-to since I was very young, from the good old Olive Garden mac to restaurants that seem way too nice for an adult to be eating mac and cheese - but I do it anyway. I consider myself a good judge of a few different dishes, but none as much as macaroni and cheese. Several of the kitchen’s cooks saw the growing popularity of food carts and decided to take their skills on the road. Like many other restaurants, Montage was looking for ways in which they could continue to provide their popular dishes to the Portland community. When COVID-19 hit in the spring of 2020, the restaurant was unable to sustain itself and shut down. Montage Ala Cart got its start as a restaurant under the Morrison Bridge just over 25 years ago. The ambiance of the Asylum is not representative of the name, the twinkling lights and the large fireplace in the center of the pavilion generate a comfortable atmosphere for you to enjoy your delicious food. Philly Cheese Steak, but Le Bistro Montage Ala Cart has stolen my heart and my stomach. I have tried many of the carts, such as sushi burritos at Rollin’ Fresh, or sandwiches at Dr. One space in particular that provides all of these options is the Hawthorne Asylum, on Madison Street in Southeast Portland.Īs an avid food explorer, I have frequently visited this spot for the variety of different cuisines that are available. They allow for the ease of a quick pickup order or provide a nice outside ambiance where you can enjoy a fantastic meal. And it speaks to a certain Portland love of excess.Food carts in Portland have become popular social sites for people of all ages. It draws you in with its audacity, but manages to satisfy despite everything going on. I realized, as I ate, that this dish encapsulates everything I love about Montage. And despite the whimsical "fuck you" attitude of the dish, it is also weirdly understated. Spam, eggs, pesto, and chicken gravy are wed into a mass of fatty goodness that rivals poutine in its ability to give sustenance, warmth, and some kind of anchor in times of inebriation. It's the mélange every drunk would make if the spins didn't dampen their ability to wield a frying pan before passing out. How had I never experienced this? The dish is wanton culinary strangeness. Then, a vision-the one dish I'd glanced at for years but had never ordered-widowed there at the bottom of the menu: green eggs and spam. Mercury Food Critic Patrick Alan Coleman reviewed them in 2009, and while they certainly never needed the help, his critique of Montage was an unabashed rave:
And in the wasteland that is late night Portland dining, they were a perfectly delicious refuge right up until 2 am.
You could always count on Le Bistro if you had a large party hungry for catfish, alligator bites, and oyster shots. Let's also never forget the Nacho-roni they made for the Mercury's 2019 Nacho Week (Juanitas chips with pulled chicken and Cajun nacho cheese macaroni on top)! Located beneath the Morrison Bridge in the Southeast industrial area of Portland, Le Bistro long served Creole and Southern cuisine to countless locals, curious visitors, and wise souls carb-loading for a night out.
“We have been so honored to serve Portland for the past 27 years,” the statement read. Le Bistro Montage, the well-known and beloved late-night eatery famous for ooey-gooey mac 'n' cheese and wrapping their leftovers in tinfoil swans, announced via Facebook that they’re permanently closing and will not reopen.
